Show Me the Learning: Portfolios, Performance & Authentic Evidence
Design richer evidence of learning through performance, portfolios, process traces, reflection and authentic products without losing validity, accessibility or manageable judgement.
- Begin with the claim, not the portfolio platform — The assessment should collect evidence because it helps support a learning claim, not because a digital platform makes collection possible.
- Ask learners to do the thing, not only describe it — Performance assessments can reveal complex knowledge and skills when learners apply them in a meaningful task.
- Use process evidence to see reasoning, revision and authorship — Final products can hide how learners reached them, especially when collaboration, external help or AI can produce polished outcomes.
- Offer multiple modes without changing what counts — Learners can sometimes show the same underlying understanding through different modes, but format choice can also change the construct.
- Make richer evidence manageable to judge — A portfolio only becomes assessment when educators and learners can interpret the evidence against clear criteria and make defensible judgements.
