Technology That Earns Its Place: The Triple E Framework
Use Engagement, Enhancement and Extension to evaluate whether technology is actually helping learners meet the learning goal.
- Start with the learning goal — Evaluate technology against the learning goal instead of evaluating the tool in isolation.
- Engage in the learning goal — Distinguish behavioural excitement from focused participation in the intended learning.
- Enhance the learning — Look for technology that creates scaffolds, representations or feedback difficult to achieve as effectively without it.
- Extend the learning — Use technology to connect learning with authentic contexts, people and resources beyond the immediate lesson.
- Make the three Es a design conversation — Use Engagement, Enhancement and Extension together to decide whether technology earns its place.
